Personality:
While he does insist that he's not a god, the Cat is a "constellation", which one of his companions says is as close to godhood as makes no difference. Unlike many other gods in his setting, the Cat is quite sympathetic to people and usually relates well to them. He thinks of people as people, not pawns.
That said he takes the long view. He's not there to make everything easy.
When he notices Beka relying on his lookout skills at the expense of her own he allows thugs lurking in hiding to give her a nasty concussion.
When he's wet he gets surly.
History: There's no indication of how old the Cat is.
The Cat went and scouted out Corus, found Beka's descendant George, and fogged the man's memory of Beka's strange cat. A few years later the Goddess gave him as a kitten to Alanna, a knight-in-training disguising herself as a boy.
With Alanna he played a different role. "Faithful", as she named him, was along for the ride. For the most part he acted as her companion or familiar.
Powers/Abilities: The Cat might as well be a god and has an array of powers, but they are never clearly delineated. He self-restricts to keep from interfering too much with the mortal world. The greater gods are not pleased when he oversteps.
When in a mortal body, as with Beka and Alanna and probably others, he needs to eat and sleep and is mortal himself. His body heals all wounds within a day or so. It takes a blow that would kill him in seconds to put his body down for good, and even then The Cat still exists.
He's able to speak, and chooses who hears him speaking and who just hears meowing at any given moment, though he can also speak silently. People he mentors, like Beka and Alanna, hear him almost all the time, while others may never know he can speak at all.
Of course, he can communicate with animals, including normal ones. Their understanding is limited. He kept a hound "in his mind" while separated from her
There are some "cat's spells" that he can cast. He can give off warmth like a fire, go unseen and unheard, make his eyes seem normally colored, set up a silencing spell so that no one outside a room can hear what transpires within. He can turn a slab of meat to mince.
There are some cleaning powers that he uses sparingly. Sometimes rain and mud slide off his fur without touching it, sometimes he gets soaked or filthy enough to need to bathe in a tub. When Beka was imprisoned he "made a pretense of washing her hair" that somehow left it clean and perfectly braided, and he washed off an item inserted into someone's butt with a sound "like a tiny rainstorm".
In his world there are greater forces. The gods are in opposition to Chaos, and he can hear it howling, whatever that means. He can also see magic, which can be strong enough to make him squint.
The Cat can glow a silver that hurts the eyes and heal a mortally wounded companion in seconds, though both of them will be worn out afterwards and have to sleep and eat a lot in turns. This is definitely interference.
